It's a sort-of cyberpunk novel in which "real time" is a very big deal, so I think Stephenson's choice of tense actually makes sense.

And Sully, have you read the Amelia Peabody mysteries? That cover, with the Egyptian background and the woman with an umbrella, reminds me so much of them!Enbrethilielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03414765854670926854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2521103169839935027.post-27903999547394918842010-12-31T16:18:28.621+01:002010-12-31T16:18:28.621+01:00I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in my disli...I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in my dislike of present tense.
@Susi: we're not crazy. I can handle it for a short story, sometimes, but as Card says, unless you're really good at it, avoid present tense.

There seems to be a ton of it in YA these days, meaning I've shoved aside several books I'd originally wanted to read because I read a page, was in agony, and stopped.Gini Kochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17801375495279134392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2521103169839935027.post-34364149967132186382010-12-30T20:08:16.569+01:002010-12-30T20:08:16.569+01:00Present tense is a big thing in children's boo...Present tense is a big thing in children's books (I read to my daughter every night) and it's irritating as heck. I guess they push for it in children's books, (who knows why) but I think it should be avoided at all costs.SQThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04251030404220909306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2521103169839935027.post-13857464050342415062010-12-30T19:59:47.510+01:002010-12-30T19:59:47.510+01:00I totally agree! Past tense is easier for me.SRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04682189161906042742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2521103169839935027.post-25315139578861393562010-12-30T19:58:34.335+01:002010-12-30T19:58:34.335+01:00If an author uses the word glad more than 3 times ...If an author uses the word glad more than 3 times in a book I won't enjoy it.
