The Scourge Between Stars - Book Review

The Scourge Between Stars
by Ness Brown

What is it about:
Ness Brown's The Scourge Between Stars is a tense, claustrophobic sci-fi/horror blend set aboard a doomed generation ship harboring something terrible within its walls.

As acting captain of the starship Calypso, Jacklyn Albright is responsible for keeping the last of humanity alive as they limp back to Earth from their forebears’ failed colony on a distant planet.

Faced with constant threats of starvation and destruction in the treacherous minefield of interstellar space, Jacklyn's crew has reached their breaking point. As unrest begins to spread throughout the ship’s Wards, a new threat emerges, picking off crew members in grim, bloody fashion.

Jacklyn and her team must hunt down the ship’s unknown intruder if they have any hope of making it back to their solar system alive.

What did I think of it:
I love it when a book is exactly what you were hoping for.

Did this story lean on Alien a lot bit: absolutely! Did I care: Nope!

I loved the story, the action, the atmosphere. I even liked most of the characters and was sad to see some of them get killed by the intruder onboard of the ship.

I haven't been reading a lot lately, but I devoured this novella in one sitting. It's action-packed while still making room for you to bond with the main characters.

I'll be keeping an eye out for more by Ness Brown.

Why should you read it:
It's a cool, action-packed SciFi horror/thriller

Teaser Tuesdays - Grave Destiny

The ghost sneered, his face torn between melancholy and rage. "They are cowardly scum and i hope you kill them as surely as i was killed."

In My TBR - Reluctant Immortals

Reluctant Immortals
by Gwendolyn Kiste

For fans of Mexican Gothic, from three-time Bram Stoker Award–winning author Gwendolyn Kiste comes a novel inspired by the untold stories of forgotten women in classic literature--from Lucy Westenra, a victim of Stoker’s Dracula, and Bertha Mason, from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre--as they band together to combat the toxic men bent on destroying their lives, set against the backdrop of the Summer of Love, Haight-Ashbury, 1967.

Reluctant Immortals is a historical horror novel that looks at two men of classic literature, Dracula and Mr. Rochester, and the two women who survived them, Bertha and Lucy, who are now undead immortals residing in Los Angeles in 1967 when Dracula and Rochester make a shocking return in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.

Combining elements of historical and gothic fiction with a modern perspective, in a tale of love and betrayal and coercion, Reluctant Immortals is the lyrical and harrowing journey of two women from classic literature as they bravely claim their own destiny in a man’s world.

Rogue Familiar - Go read it!!!!

By now you know I love Jeffe Kennedy's books, and this one is yet another winner.
I'm not going to review besides saying that this is awesome, dark and beautiful!

Go read it!

Rogue Familiar (Renegades of Magic #2)
By Jeffe Kennedy

He left to save her from herself… But who will save him from her?

When Lady Seliah Phel wakes from a drugged sleep to find herself abandoned by her newly bonded wizard, she vows revenge—and to hunt him down. Tracking him through the familiar wilds of the marshlands of her home is the easy part; learning to use her nascent magical skills is something else entirely. So is facing the vast, uncaring society of the Convocation in a time of brewing war.

Jadren El-Adrel is not known for doing the right thing, but getting as far away from Seliah as possible before he drains her dry will be his one noble gesture. So what if she weeps a few tears. Better than her dying in his service—or enabling him to become the ravenous beast that crawls beneath his skin. Unfortunately, in his self-imposed exile, and without the power of his familiar, Jadren quickly runs afoul of the enemy.

As her vengeful quest for recapture becomes a rescue mission, Selly faces all she still doesn’t know about the greater world of wizards and familiars. And Jadren, once determined to walk his own path and stay far, far away from the idealistic fools of House Phel, finds himself aligning with them against the house of his birth. War is coming to the Convocation, which means a clever wizard should pick the side most likely to win.

Sadly, Jadren has never been all that clever…

Teaser Tuesdays - Sister, Maiden, Monster

My current read totally is giving me Lovecraftian vibes! Three large yellow arms? First thing that comes to mind is the Yellow Sign.

The decorative paving stone pattern was... strange. Three large yellow arms arced and wound out from the fountain. The arms were too irregular, too dissimilar to be intended as decoration.

Still here!

So I've been distracted by other things and haven't been reading much.
This week there's a teaser from my current read, a call to go read another book I did make the time for to read and a book I want to read soon. I'll try to get some reviews in next week.
