Teaser Tuesdays - Downsiders (2)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I'm still reading Downsiders. apart from having little time to read, I think this book is so beautifully written it deserves to be savoured.

A single sentence was engraved on the wall of the Brass Junction:

FEAR THE TOPSIDE, OR BE CRUSHED BY ITS EMBRACE.

(page 116, Downsiders by Neal Shusterman)

That'll get a downsider's attention. Excellent teaser.

When I first read this book, I was amazed at how believable Neal Shusterman makes the Downside culture. They have their own history, their own art, their own fashions, and even their own "primitive" literature. (I don't mean to debase it with the word "primitive"--but it reminds me of the big jump from oral traditions to hieroglyphics, and I can't think of another word.) This Downside "proverb" is a perfect example: nobody but a Downsider could have seen the world in those terms and captured the idea so succintly.

I'm really glad you're enjoying this, Sully! I might have mentioned before that many of my friends don't like my book recommendations and that I've stopped trying with them. But your reaction makes me feel as if I'm reading the novel for the first time again! =)

I'm so enjoying this book.
I'm really glad I picked this one.
It's the third book I'm reading with a hidden world underneath a city and the best of the three I must say even though one of the others is written by Neil Gaiman.
