City of Ghosts - Book Review

City of Ghosts (Cassidy Blake #1)
by Victoria Schwab

What is it about:
Cassidy Blake's parents are The Inspecters, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.

When The Inspecters head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn't sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn't belong in her world. Cassidy's powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.

What did I think of it:
I loved The Archived series and This Savage Song by Schwab, so I was very curious about this book that is aimed at a younger audience.

And this is a really cool read.

Cass can see ghosts and cross to beyond the veil, but she still has to learn a lot about her powers and how to use them. In Edinburgh she discovers that there are far more powerful ghosts than she ever met before and that she has to learn fast if she wants to survive.

I liked Cass' friendship with Jacob and loved how they were there for each other. I also enjoyed learning a bit about Edinburgh's history and ghost stories. I had some trouble with Lara, but she grew on me. And this book made me look up the rules of taking a pet to the UK and I discovered that these days it's a lot easier than it was in the past.

All in all this book sets up the world and characters in a very enjoyable way and adds a creepy adventure with high stakes. I had a good time with this book and will definitely keep an eye out for the next.

Why should you read it:
It's a fun and enjoyable Middle Grade read
