What is it about:
Third-generation funeral director Lizzie Morton is about to have her dream realized. She has purchased the long abandoned Nichols Funeral Home and its upstairs flat, determined to restore the funeral home to its once former glory. But a strange, late night visitor, Adam Nichols, claims the funeral home still belongs to him.
What did I think of it:
A short and sweet paranormal story.
Bates manages to set up and deliver a mysterious and intriguing story in just seven pages. I liked how she leaves things open for interpretation without giving the story an unfinished feeling. The writing is pleasant. The characters could have been more fleshed out, but that's difficult to do in such a short story and they're rounded enough to relate to them. I hope Bates will either write more short stories and publish an anthology or better yet: write a novel sized story, because I'd love to read more.
