What is it about:

It's been almost a year since the magical apocalypse closed off the city of Manchester from the rest of the world. The vampires, werewolves and humans within the city all now live together in relative harmony ... but trouble is brewing on the horizon. Supplies are starting to run out and, despite their best efforts to grow crops and create a sustainable future, everyone knows that it will be an uphill battle. Still, the magic swirling in the city air is an incredible bonus. Charley, the most magical of them all, is determined to do whatever she can to help out her new community and with Monroe by her side, she's confident that things will turn out alright. But when someone from beyond Manchester's walls makes contact, what happens next will be anyone's guess.

This is the third and final book in the City of Magic series. 

What did I think of it:

This is the last book in this trilogy and I can tell you this series goes out with a bang.

There's lots of action and suspense in this book. I had a great time with it. I love Charley and her friends and couldn't wait to see how they try to overcome their problems.

Things seem dire at times, but there's also humor and endearing moments to be had. I was both satisfied when I finished this book as disappointed that my time in Magical Manchester was over. You bet this will go on the keeper shelves. I will also investigate Harper's other books.

Why should you read it:

It's a fun and cool Urban Fantasy read.

Brittle Midnight - Book Review

 

Brittle Midnight (City of Magic #2)

What is it about:

Who ever thought that life after an apocalyptic event would be easy?

Charley is under pressure. The demands of her new community are piling on stress after stress and, even with her developing magical skills, she's finding it hard to cope. Things aren't any better for Monroe - his grief and guilt over what happened to his werewolf pack are overwhelming him. When dead bodies start to appear across the city, they're going to have to work together to prevent more killings. But whether they'll be able to survive together too is anyone's guess.

What did I think of it:

I very much enjoyed the first book in this series, but somehow this second book ended up an orphan. I decided to pick it up at the start of this month.

And what a fun read! I made sure to ask for the third book for my birthday, so I can read that one soon as well.

After all the wackiness of the first book things have settled down somewhat and everyone is trying to get used to the new situation. But then there's a murder!

I loved seeing Charley and Monroe working together and to see how both of them try to get to terms with what happened. They make a great team even though they don't want to admit it.

There's tons of other cool characters as well, and the murder mystery kept me guessing. I raced through this book and I'm eager to see how this trilogy will end. Book three won't go dusty, I can tell you.

Shrill Dusk - Book Review

What is it about:
Charley is a cleaner by day and a professional gambler by night. She might be haunted by her tragic past but she's never thought of herself as anything or anyone special. Until, that is, things start to go terribly wrong all across the city of Manchester.

Between plagues of rats, firestorms and the gleaming blue eyes of a sexy Scottish werewolf, she might just have landed herself in the middle of a magical apocalypse. She might also be the only person who has the ability to bring order to an utterly chaotic new world.

What did I think of it:
I will confess I totally fell in love with the cover of this book. Then a friend mentioned there was a pink elephant in the story and I couldn't resist giving it a try.

This book is weird, fun, and very entertaining.

I will confess I had my doubts when reading the prologue, but once the story actually started I was soon hooked. Strange things are happening in Manchester, and Charley soon finds herself in the middle of weirdness, danger, and magic. As she and her roommate try to stay alive danger keeps finding them, and not only because Charley has a serious savior complex.

I couldn't stop reading: I had to find out why these strange things were happening and what was going on with Charley. Enter a Scottish werewolf and I was completely sold.

This book is an almost non-stop ride of action, absurd situations, and suspense. I loved Charley and her roommate Lizzy, and many more interesting and cool characters and monsters made an appearance, including a tentacled beastie and the pink elepant.

All in all this is a really fun read, so you bet I'll get my trotters on book 2 when it releases. I also discovered this series is a spin-off from another series, so I'll most certainly give that series a try as well.
