Cold Storage - Book Review

Cold Storage
by David Koepp

What is it about:
When Pentagon bioterror operative Roberto Diaz was sent to investigate a suspected biochemical attack, he found something far worse: a highly mutative organism capable of extinction-level destruction. He contained it and buried it in cold storage deep beneath a little-used military repository.

Now, after decades of festering in a forgotten sub-basement, the specimen has found its way out and is on a lethal feeding frenzy. Only Diaz knows how to stop it.

He races across the country to help two unwitting security guards—one an ex-con, the other a single mother. Over one harrowing night, the unlikely trio must figure out how to quarantine this horror again. All they have is luck, fearlessness, and a mordant sense of humor. Will that be enough to save all of humanity?

What did I think of it:
This sounded like an action-filled read, so I picked it up as an impulse buy when I was at the bookstore.

And this book is entertaining enough, but showed me why I should be careful in just picking up books.

It starts out cool enough with the events that lead up to the mutative organism getting locked in cold storage for a few decades. Yes, there was the inevitable instant attraction between the male lead and the first woman who wasn't his military partner who walked onto the pages of the book, as it almost always is in a book written by a guy. (Of course his military partner turned out to have been in secret love with him as well...) But that cliché aside the start of this book had me invested and eager to see what would happen next.

Then we came to the pat where the specimen got out again...

There were multiple viewpoints and for some reason I had to learn about the complete life, shoe size, and brainfarts of EVERY character, including the specimen! On top of that there was this more than awkward romantic thing between the 'nice guy' ex-con and the single mother. I will confess it was cringy in my opinion.

Luckily there was some cool action, but less than I had hoped for.

All in all an entertaining, but totally forgettable read.

Why should you read it:
Just hope they make it into a movie with a cool actor in the role of the ex-con.
