What’s in a Name? More Than You Think! - Guest Post by Susannah Sandlin

Illumination, the last book in the Penton Legacy series, released earlier this month. I finally managed to get hold of a print copy this week, so expect a review soon.

Today Susannah is visiting my blog with a guest post about names.

What’s in a Name? More Than You Think!
by Susannah Sandlin

“How do you name your characters?” It’s one of the common questions authors get, and the answers vary from author to author. Here are my methods:

A name drops out of the ether.
Shay Underwood, the heroine of ILLUMINATION, was one of those. The name just came to me, I liked it, it wasn’t too similar to any other major characters in my books, and I kept it. Ditto with the hero, Nikolas Dimitrou, aka Nik. He is half Greek. It sounds Greek. I kept it. Ditto with the hero of the previous Penton book, Cage Reynolds.

A family or acquaintance name fits the character.
I did this more often in my early books. Drusilla Jane “DJ” Jaco, the heroine of my Sentinels of New Orleans urban fantasy series (written as Suzanne Johnson) is a mashed-up version of my great-grandmothers Drusilla Jane Harris and Ida Jaco. Quince Randolph pays homage to my great-grandfather Rand Sandlin. And, yes, my pen is also that of my gggg-grandmother Susannah Sandlin (who’s probably spinning in her grave up in Bug Tussle, Alabama). I used a slew of my own and my pets’ names in my book LOVELY, DARK, AND DEEP (the hero, Shane, was named after my Irish terrier; my rott-chow-triever Tanker played himself). The surname of my neighbors in New Orleans was Zrakovi, which I took as my villain’s name in the Sentinels books.

I look for a name with a specific meaning, or that’s right for the era or location.
I knew the head of my Penton Legacy vampire scathe (or family) was in his human life an Irish farmer, so what’s more Irish than Murphy? And Aidan, originally Áodhán, is an old Gaelic name. In the Sentinels series, the character of Alex needed a strong, warrior-like name to match his nature, so I chose Alexander and softened it as a nod to his Louisiana mama by giving him the (to him) embarrassing middle name of Basile.

I look for pronounceable names that are simple but distinctive.
One of my favorite tricks is using surnames as given names. The Penton Legacy character of Mirren Kincaid drew his first name from, yep, actress Helen Mirren (shhh…don’t tell him). I liked the last name Gentry, so I gave it to my hero of WILD MAN’S CURSE as a first name: Gentry Broussard. I also like ironic names, which is why I named Penton’s eagle shifter Robin (her sister is named Wren). My STORM FORCE heroine is named after a nearby university, Emory, although she has shortened it to Mori.

I keep my minor character names simple.
Thus, we have names like Jonathan, David, Michael and Linda—nice names but not ones I’m likely to use for hero or heroine material.

But naming characters has its pitfalls.

You don’t want too many characters with similar names.
I learned that lesson the hard way when I was writing Penton #2, ABSOLUTION, the first book in which the character of Cage Reynolds makes an appearance. His original name was Marcus, but I realized in the course of revision that I had a Mirren, a Mark, a Melissa, a Matthias—and now a Marcus. The other four were already in the previous book so that barn door had closed. I could, however, change “Marcus” to “Cage.”

You don’t want use names with baggage.
I mean, would you want a hero named Adolph or Hitler? ‘Nuff said.

Make sure old-fashioned names aren’t TOO old-fashioned.
I mean, “Sarah” is a timeless name, but a heroine named Bertha or Gertrude? Uh, probably not. My grandmother was Bertha, so I named a hurricane for her in STORM FORCE; I wasn’t saddling a character with her name, sweet woman that she was.

Make sure your name is right for the era.
Aidan Murphy’s original name was Galen, right up until my “alpha reader” got her draft of REDEMPTION. She hated the name Galen so much that she did some research and found that the name Galen was not used in Ireland in Aidan’s human lifetime of the early 1600s and therefore I had to change it. Áodhán, however, was in use, so Galen became Aidan.

Avoid names from popular books in the same or similar genre.
Aidan’s heroine, Krys (named after the fast-food chain, Krystal Hamburgers), was originally named Bethany, aka Beth. Somewhere along the way, I realized Beth was the name of the heroine in JR Ward’s first Black Dagger Brotherhood book, so while Galen became Aidan, Beth became Krys. Boy, was that manuscript a mess as I tried to catch all the changed names!

So, how do you get your names? It’s a more complex process than one might think! Do you have a favorite name from a book you’ve read lately? I’ll give away a $10 Amazon gift card (or equivalent order from Book Depository if outside the U.S.) to a commenter*. In the U.S., $10 will buy the Kindle versions of the entire five-book Penton Legacy series plus the Penton 3.5 spinoff, STORM FORCE, through the end of this month!

About Illumination:

He came to Penton seeking peace. Nik Dimitrou joined the Army to escape his family legacy, only to have his psychic abilities exploited as a weapon. Now, as a civilian, he turns to the bottle to veil the images that haunt his mind whenever he touches anyone—except vampires. With them, he has finally found a home. But as Penton, Alabama, moves into open warfare with the Vampire Tribunal, Nik finds himself a linchpin in the deepening conflict, not to mention facing a transformation in his own body more frightening than anything he’s encountered before.

She wanted to change the world. Shay Underwood watched her Peace Corps parents move from one third world country to another—until both died following an outbreak of fever. Driven to her own career in tropical medicine, Shay works in New Orleans to cure the disease that killed her parents—until a careless weekend outing draws her into a world far more dangerous than the diseases she studies: a vampire society engaged in human trafficking and on the verge of all-out war.

Two cities, two near-strangers, one world. With Penton rebellion leader Aidan Murphy making risky choices and chief vampire lieutenant Mirren Kincaid forced to take a leadership role in Penton, it will fall to two outsiders, Nik and Shay, to find a way for the town—and themselves—to survive in this much-anticipated conclusion to the multiple award-winning Penton Legacy series.

Black Diamond - Release Day Review + Giveaway

Black Diamond (Wilds of the Bayou #2)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
For some people, the untamed beauty of the bayou is a place to hide. For Louisiana wildlife agent Jena Sinclair, it’s a place of refuge—one where she can almost forget the tragedy that scarred both her skin and her soul. But when the remains of yet another fisherman turn up, Jena realizes that Bayou Pointe-aux-Chenes is not safe for her…or anyone else.

The mysterious deaths aren’t her only problem. A dangerous drug known as Black Diamond is circulating through Terrebonne Parish, turning addicts into unpredictable sociopaths. Jena’s investigation leads her to Cole Ryan—a handsome, wary recluse struggling with his own troubled history—who knows more than he’s willing to admit. If they want to stop the killer, Jena and Cole must step out of the shadows of their pasts and learn to help each other…before the evils lurking in the bayou consume them both.

What did I think of it:
I've loved everything I've read by Susannah Sandlin/Suzanne Johnson so far, so you bet I pre-ordered this book.

And it's yet another great read.

The way Sandlin describes the bayou makes that I could easily picture it and imagine I was there. I loved the mood and atmosphere in this book, just as I loved it in the previous one.

I liked Jena in the first book, so I was rooting for her from the start. Events from the first book had a serious impact on Jena, and the drugs flooding the parish aren't her only problem. Cole is an intriguing character as well, and I had to keep reading to find out what would happen to both of them.

Another thing I love about this series are the minor characters. They play an important role in the story and seeing these recurring characters makes that you feel for not only the lead characters, but the entire Parish. (And I so want to read a book with Paul as the lead character!!)

All in all this is a gripping and suspenseful read, with a fast developing, but believable romance, great characters and writing, and gators! I can recommend it to anyone who's looking for a great Romantic Suspense read.

Why should you read it:
It's an awesome Romantic Suspense read. And did I mention the gators!

Book Review - Wild Man's Curse (repost)

Wild Man's Curse (Wilds of the Bayou #1)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
The bones said death was comin’, and the bones never lied.

While on an early morning patrol in the swamps of Whiskey Bayou, Louisiana wildlife agent Gentry Broussard spots a man leaving the home of voodoo priestess Eva Savoie—a man who bears a startling resemblance to his brother, whom Gentry thought he had killed during a drug raid three years earlier. Shaken, the agent enters Eva’s cabin and makes a bloody discovery: the old woman has been brutally murdered.

With no jurisdiction over the case, he’s forced to leave the investigation to the local sheriff, until Eva’s beautiful heir, Celestine, receives a series of gruesome threats. As Gentry’s involvement deepens and more victims turn up, can he untangle the secrets behind Eva’s murder and protect Celestine from the same fate? Or will an old family curse finally have its way?

What did I think of it:
I love the Penton books by Sandlin and all her other books as well, so I had to get my trotters on this book.

And it is so good!

Sandlin has a very engaging writing style that draws you in from the start. I love how she sets the mood for this story in her descriptions, and I could almost feel the swampy heat. Whiskey Bayou sounds like a beautiful, but harsh place to live.

Both Gentry and Ceelie are easy to like and root for. I also fell in love with Jena and Paul, two of the other characters. I'm really hoping both will get their own book in this series.

The story is very suspenseful and full of mystery. What's the curse resting on Ceelie's family? Why was Eva killed? It didn't take me long to be totally engrossed in the story and to root for Gentry and Ceelie to figure out what was going on and why.

All in all this is a gripping read both because of the story and the setting. I will most certainly get my trotters on any other books in this series.

Why should you read it:
It's a beautiful and atmospheric Romantic Suspense read.

Deadly, Calm, and Cold - Book Review

Deadly, Calm, and Cold (The Collectors #2)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
How far will ordinary people go to protect their secrets? The Collectors’ games are as much about manipulating lives as finding lost treasure. Everyone is expendable as the ruthless C7 pushes people into gambling with their lives in order to find priceless objects lost to history.

Samantha Crowe’s secrets could ruin her career, while Brody Parker’s could get him killed. They become pawns for two Collectors seeking Bad King John’s crown jewels, which disappeared in rural England back when Robin Hood roamed Nottingham. This time, however, the Collectors—a ruthless dotcom billionaire and a desperate London detective—might not be playing for the same team, leaving Sam and Brody trapped in the middle.

One thing’s for sure: if either hopes to survive, Sam and Brody will have to find a way to overcome their distrust—and their growing attraction—in order to succeed on this winner-take-all treasure hunt.

What did I think of it:
I very much enjoyed the first book in this series, so I had to read this one as well.

And this is yet another fun and suspenseful story.

Brody is forced in sabotaging Sam's quest to find king John's crown jewels. Luckily this sabotage isn't going so far that I couldn't believe in Sam and Brody overcoming their mistrust of each other though. They both are resilient and inventive and make a great team.

Again the story and the mood reminded me of the Indiana Jones movies: There's adventure, searching for lost treasure, lots of intrigue, danger, and romance. (And there might not be any evil Nazis, but the Collectors make up for that ;-))

And if maybe Brody and Sam escape danger a little too easily, or find a too neat solution to their problems, that doesn't matter. Because that's supposed to happen in stories like this. It might be a book, but I could easily see this story happening on the big screen: exciting firefights, explosions and all.

All in all this is yet another cool and entertaining adventure romance. I will most certainly read other books in this series, if there will be more.

Why should you read it:
It's a very entertaining Contemporary Adventure Romance.

Lovely, Dark, and Deep - Book Review

Lovely, Dark, and Deep (The Collectors #1)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
When biologist Gillian Campbell makes an offhand comment about a family curse during a TV interview, she has no idea what her words will set in motion. Within days, Gillian finds herself at the mercy of a member of the C7, a secretive international group of power brokers with a dangerous game: competing to find the world’s most elusive treasures, no matter the cost, in money or in lives. To save her family, Gillian teams up with Shane Burke, a former elite diver who’s lost his way, navigating the brutal “death coast” of the North Atlantic to find what the collector seeks: the legendary Ruby Cross of the Knights Templar, stolen by Gillian’s ancestor and lost at sea four hundred years ago.

What did I think of it:
I don't normally read contemporary adventure romance, but having loved all other books Sandlin has written, I wanted to give this book a try.

And I'm glad I did.

This is a very enjoyable story. It has suspense, evil villains, an unlikely hero, and an awesome dog!

There's also lots of action, a very enjoyable romance, and did I tell you about the awesome dog?

Seriously: this book is a lot of fun. The characters are interesting and likable. Both Gillian and Shane have their secret hurts, and I liked seeing them slowly opening up and starting to trust each other with their secrets.

The villains are of course of the very evil and creepy kind, and at times I wondered how Gillian and Shane would ever get out of this whole adventure alive, but Sandlin delivers in a way that satisfied me.

All in all this is a book that I can advice to anyone who's looking for a story filled with adventure, romance, and treasures. I already preordered the next book in this series, so I can read it as soon as it releases.

Why should you read it:
It's a cool action-packed Adventure Romance

Allegiance - Book Review

Allegiance (Penton Legacy #4)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
British vampire psychiatrist and former mercenary Cage Reynolds returns to Penton, Alabama, looking for a permanent home. The town has been ravaged by the ongoing vampire war and the shortage of untainted human blood, and now the vampires and humans that make up the Omega Force are trying to rebuild. Cage hopes to help the cause, put down roots in Penton, and resolve his relationship with Melissa Calvert. The last thing he expects is an attraction to Robin Ashton, a trash-talking eagle shape-shifter and new Omega recruit.

Meanwhile, as a dangerous saboteur wreaks havoc in Penton, the ruthless Vampire Tribunal leader Matthias Ludlam has been freed on the eve of his scheduled execution. But by whom? And to what end? As war and chaos rage on, love is the last thing Cage is looking for, but will his attraction to Robin distract him from the danger living among them?

What did I think of it:
This is such a great series.

Next to each book having a stand alone romance, there's an overall action storyline that runs through this series.

And thing are getting more and more tense with each book!

I really liked Cage when he appeared earlier in the series, but wasn't too happy he seemed to connect with Melissa. I am not a big fan of Melissa. So I was very happy when in Allegiance Robin turned up, and she set her eyes on Cage.

Robin and Cage make a great couple: they spark! I loved reading how they got to know each other. Robin is a really fun character overall btw. I liked how she stands her ground no matter what, and even takes on Mirren, who is one scary vampire.

The action storyline was also really intense. I thought things were at their worst after Omega, but I was wrong. More nastiness is headed towards Penton and at times things looked very, very grim. And although the romantic storyline got resolved, the events in this book leave Penton with some serious problems the vampires and their allies have to overcome.

You can bet I will keep an eye out for the next book in this series, because I need to know what's next for Penton.

Why should you read it:
It's a really cool Paranormal Romance with lots of action.

Hijacked! - Guest Post by Susannah Sandlin + giveaway

Today Susannah Sandlin is visiting my blog to tell you about how her book got Hijacked!

Hijacked!
Susannah Sandlin

A funny thing happens when one writes something as long and involved as a novel.

Think about it. The average novel is about 150-200 typed, single-spaced sheets of standard printer paper. It’s 90,000 words long, give or take a few thousand.

As we write, we get to know our characters really well—we know things about our characters’ lives that never make it onto the page. (Ernest Hemingway called character development an iceberg: most of the material remains below the waterline.)

Which means that this weird thing happens as we write: the characters develop minds of their own. Quite frequently, they say or do something that I, as their supposed creator, do not anticipate, even when I’ve plotted out my scene ahead of time. They surprise me, entertain me, exasperate me, and occasionally confuse me.

And sometimes they don’t listen to a word I say.

Last year, I wrote a paranormal romance book called STORM FORCE that was loosely tied to my Penton Legacy series. There were some characters in Storm Force I really liked and wanted to get to know better, so when I began writing ALLEGIANCE, I decided to see what would happen if I brought a couple of those other characters into my Penton world.

Enter an eagle shape-shifter named Robin (I know, right?) and a human Army Ranger with psychic abilities, Nikolas Dimitrou. I’d planned to have Nik and Robin, who had a friends-with-benefits relationship in Storm Force, to move to Penton as a couple and help my Penton vampires rebuild their town after their author destroyed it in the previous two books. Yeah, that would be me, the Destroyer.

Nik behaved gallantly. He liked the vampires, respected their leaders, helped them however he was needed. I like Nik.

Robin was a nightmare from the minute she walked into the book. First, the 5-foot-1 Robin picked a fight—a nasty one—with the 6-foot-8 Scottish vampire who heads up Penton security and has a bad disposition to begin with.

Well, okay, I can roll with that. Mirren and Robin were kind of fun together. Anything I can do to annoy Mirren has always entertained me, and Robin really annoys him.

But then Robin did something I did not expect. She caught the eye of my book hero, Cage Reynolds, a British vampire who was trying to resolve another relationship. I had other plans for Cage.

But okay, just because Cage finds her interesting doesn’t mean anything. She’s an extreme kind of character, and he was a psychiatrist in his human life. He would naturally find her intriguing.

My mistake was having Cage accompany Nik and Robin to their new quarters on their first night in Penton. It’s a ten-minute drive in Nik’s car.

Here’s how the scene was supposed to play out:

Nik wants to move to Penton hoping he can’t read psychic images from vampires. He can get disturbing images from other humans, from inanimate objects, and from some shape-shifters. He’s never met a vampire before. So in this scene, I wanted to establish that he could, indeed, touch vampires, so Penton would be a peaceful place for him to live. Since Nik’s not so good at opening up to people, Robin’s purpose in the short car scene was to tell Cage that Nik needed to touch him, to test out the psychic thing.

Yeah, that was what was supposed to happen, and it did. Robin did her job. She also exchanged sexual banter with Cage, played with his hair, and became fascinated with her first vampire. She wanted to feed him, to see what it felt like. She wanted to...well, Robin has few limits.

After that, it really didn’t matter what I wanted. This became Robin’s book. I hope you like it. If not, you know who to blame—the eagle-shifter named Robin!

An Interview with Susannah Sandlin + Giveaway

We had Suzanne Johnson drop by with a cool piece of Flash Fiction not long ago. Today she drops by again, so we could interview her as Susannah Sandlin, the penname she uses for her awesome Paranormal Romances.

Welcome to Pearls Cast Before A McPig, Susannah.
Could you tell a bit about yourself and your books for those people who don’t know you yet?

Sure! I write both urban fantasy with a touch of romance and paranormal romance with a dose of urban fantasy. I’ve been writing fiction for only the last five years; all of my career has been spent in university publishing (which I still do). I currently live in Alabama, but consider my longtime city of New Orleans to be my hometown.

The Penton Legacy series, beginning with Redemption last June, was my first foray into paranormal romance—it’s a series set in a world in which the blood of humans who’ve been vaccinated for a pandemic is suddenly turned poisonous to vampires. So vampires are starving and on the verge of civil war. The war comes to the small Alabama town of Penton, where a group of peaceful vampires has established a kind of closed-society utopia in this little ghost town. Each book follows one of the vampire leaders and his own journey to love and forgiveness...while all hell breaks loose around them! In June, a very loose spinoff (different characters) called Storm Force was released that featured a special ops team of Army Rangers and shapeshifters working cases of domestic terrorism.

You had Storm Force released as a serial and was still writing on it when the first part released. Did this influence your writing or did you have the whole story already planned?

Writing a serial novel was a wild, wild ride! I did keep up with what comments were being made about the book by readers as each of the nine “episodes” came out (basically four chapters per episode), and I might have changed directions if everyone had hated the hero, for example, or one of the other characters. But that didn’t happen. I had mapped out the story in outline form before I started writing and, as always, I did change things as I wrote. But the general flow of the story didn’t change from my original vision for it. Everything just got ramped up really fast because of the serial schedule!

What is the future for the Penton series and its spin-off?

I’m working on a fourth Penton book and hope my publisher is interested in putting it out; if not, I’ll release it on my own because there were some things that happened in Omega, the third Penton book, that I want to explore further—the character of Cage Reynolds, for example, who was a psychiatrist for the British Army before being turned vampire. And the Native American child vampire everyone calls Hannah—I want to tell her story. I have a proposal in for another book featuring the counter-terrorism team from Storm Force, focusing on the eagle shapeshifter named, inappropriately, Robin. So...we’ll wait and see how it all comes out.

Have you ever used people you know as characters in your books?

Not really—the people I know aren’t neurotic enough to be one of my characters! Okay, there was one. The only character I’ve come close to basing on a real person was Krystal Harris, the heroine of Redemption. But my lips are sealed as to who it was based on!

Are there any other projects you’re working on under this penname or thinking about starting in the near future?

Besides working on Deliverance/Penton 4, I am in the “playing around and researching” phase with a story that I’m really excited about. It might go in any of several directions—paranormal, romantic suspense, or thriller, but it involves a washed-up salvage diver, a desperate woman, evil powermongers, and the Knights Templar. What’s not to like? LOL.

Where can you be found when you’re not at your desk writing?

Unfortunately, it’s usually at my day job, which owns me from 7:30 each morning until about 6 each evening. So most of my writing is done nights and weekends.

What did you do to celebrate the release of your first book?

My first book was an urban fantasy, Royal Street, written under the name Suzanne Johnson. It launched in New Orleans, where the series is set, so a bunch of friends (we call ourselves the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Snark”) came in from as far as New York City and we all converged on New Orleans for the launch at a local bookshop, then went with some of my good friends from NOLA to a dinner at Commander’s Palace. Beautiful memories!

When Redemption came out, my first book as Susannah Sandlin. I was working the day job and spent the evening frantically writing on the second Penton book!

What is the best thing about being a published author?

It’s still a new thing for me. It’s been only a year and a half since my first book came out—what a crazy year and a half! I think the best thing is being able to meet people in person or online who’ve actually read my books (which still surprises me) and want to talk about them. I also enjoy talking shop with other authors; there’s a great online community of authors who write similar genres or live in close proximity, and I’ve made great new friends, both in person and online.

What authors have been an influence to you? And have you read any books lately that you want to share with us or have you been too busy with writing to read?

Probably the most influential author on me long-term is Stephen King. I grew up reading his books, and his mammoth novel The Stand is still my favorite book of all time. I actually finished reading an amazing book recently that wasn’t for research! It is called Wisp of a Thing, and was written by my friend Alex Bledsoe. The book is a follow-up to The Hum and the Shiver, which was hands-down my favorite read of 2012. It’s a paranormal fantasy set in the mountains of eastern Tennessee, and is just beautifully written and a mysterious story well-told.

Will there be zombies or pigs in any of your future books?

Ha! Hm.... I can’t see me writing zombies. Pigs, however...I hereby promise to put a pig in the fourth Penton book, at least in a cameo appearance! My favorite recent pig story....I was driving down the length of Florida last fall, zipping down I-75 between Ft. Myers and Naples...and there was a freaking wild pig trotting down the side of the highway! He was huge. I know I can work that into a story somewhere....

I'll be keeping an eye out for the pig :-)
Thanks for dropping by.

Storm Force - Book Review by Voodoo Bride

Storm Force (Omega Force #1)
by Susannah Sandlin

What did Voodoo Bride think of it:
I loved all three books in Sandlin's Penton Legacy series, so when I heard that Sandlin had a new story coming out that was a spin-off from that series I had to read it.

I had to wait a bit for it though, because it first released as a Kindle Serial. Because I do not have a Kindle and I'm not willing to read on my notebook, that meant I had to wait for it to become available elsewhere.

And it was worth the wait!

This book is just as delicious and filled with suspenseful action as the Penton books.

I loved Kell and the rest of the Omega Force. They're still getting used to each other, which made the dynamics interesting to read. I was also very intrigued by Mori and the life she leads.

The romantic storyline between Kell and Mori was very intense. The problems they encounter are heartbreaking at times and had me cheering both of them on. The balance between romance and action is very well done and kept me reading to find out what was happening next.

All in all I very much enjoyed this book and I hope Sandlin will continue both this series and the Penton series, because I want much, much more.

Why should you read it:
It's an action-packed Paranormal Romance

Omega - Book Review by Voodoo Bride

Omega (Penton Legacy #3)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
The bloody war between the Vampire Tribunal and the defiant scathe of Penton, Alabama, rages on, forcing its residents and their bonded humans to retreat into the underground fortress of last resort: Omega. There, Will Ludlam is charged with the care of Penton’s humans, though he longs to fight alongside his vampire brethren. He knows the risks: as the renegade son of the Tribunal’s vicious leader, Will’s capture could doom the resistance. Yet he is determined to prove his worth to his adopted scathe, to his vengeful father—and to former US Army officer Randa Thomas, his beautiful, reluctant partner. Randa has little faith that a former member of the vampire elite has what it takes to fight a war. But as their enemies descend upon Omega, Will’s polished charm—and Randa’s guarded heart—finally give way to the warrior within.

What did Voodoo Bride think of it:
I will confess I had my doubts about this book.

I loved the first two books in this series and the overall storyline and I was dying to read how it all would end in this last installment. I didn't much like Will in the first two book though and he's the hero of Omega, so I was worried if I'd like the romance.

I loved it!

Will turns out to be a complex character with hidden depths and Sandlin managed to make me fall in love with him. I also really liked Randa. She's strong and stubborn, but willing to accept she's wrong about things from time to time. The romance between the two was a delight to read.

The action storyline was just as intense as I had expected it to be after the events in the first two books and doesn't disappoint. This is a suspenseful and action packed read that I couldn't put down until I finished it. A perfect conclusion to the trilogy.

I will reread this trilogy for sure and I will keep an eye out for more books by Sandlin. I understand she will write at least one spin-off to this series and you can bet I'll be getting my hands on that.

Why should you read it:
It's a romantic and suspenseful Paranormal Romance

Absolution - Book Review by Voodoo Bride

Absolution (Penton Legacy #2)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
With the vampire world on the brink of civil war over the scarcity of untainted human blood, battle lines are being drawn between the once peaceful vampire and human enclave of Penton, Alabama, and the powerful Vampire Tribunal. Mirren Kincaid once served the tribunal as their most creative and ruthless executioner—a time when he was known as the Slayer. But when assigned a killing he found questionable, Mirren abandoned the tribunal’s political machinations and disappeared—only to resurface two centuries later as the protector and second-in-command of Penton. Now the tribunal wants him back on their side.

To break their rogue agent, they capture Glory Cummings, the descendant of a shaman, and send her to restore Mirren’s bloodthirsty nature. But instead of a monster, Glory sees a man burdened by the weight of his past. Could her magic touch—meant by the tribunal to bring out a violent killer—actually help Mirren break his bonds and discover the love he doesn’t believe he deserves?

What did Voodoo Bride think of it:
This book is even better than the first!

I already loved Mirren in Redemption, but in this book he's magnificent (and he's got a goatee!). He's a very intriguing man with a horrifying past that left its scars.

Glory is a really great character as well. They fit each other perfectly and the romance between them was more than delicious. I liked how Glory has a very leading role in the two of them getting together. The scenes between Mirren and Glory were tense, romantic and emotional at times.

The action story line was intense and really cool. Although you can read this book as a standalone, the action story line was a continuation of the first book and things escalated even further. Sandlin again did a great job with the world building and I can't wait how things will resolve themselves in book three, which will be the last in this series sadly enough.

This book is a keeper and I'll be rereading it for sure. And of course I need to get book three once it releases next month.

Why should you read it:
It's got a delicious romance and really cool action.

Redemption - Book Review by Voodoo Bride

Redemption (Penton Legacy #1)
by Susannah Sandlin

What is it about:
For vampire Aidan Murphy, life has never been so desperate. The vaccine used to treat a global pandemic has rendered human blood deadly to his kind, leaving them on the brink of starvation and civil war. In tiny Penton, Alabama, Aidan establishes a peaceful community of vampires and unvaccinated human donors. He dares to hope they can survive—until his estranged brother descends upon Penton and begins killing the humans. Determined to save his town, Aidan kidnaps an unsuspecting human doctor—and finds himself falling in love for the first time in nearly four centuries.

Dr. Krystal Harris thought she was coming to Penton for a job interview, but Aidan Murphy has other plans. Infuriated by his high-handed scheme to imprison her in the small town, Krys can't ignore the attraction between them. But is it love? Or does her dangerous, charismatic captor want only to bend her to his will?

What did Voodoo Bride think of it:
This is how Paranormal Romance should be:

- A hot Alpha hero
- A heroine who seems fragile, but actually can hold her own
- A sizzling attraction between the two that's not just physical
- And last: A decent action storyline that intertwines with the romantic storyline perfectly

I really loved the world building as well. The idea of a vaccine that makes humans poisonous for vampires and thus creates a food shortage is fresh and opens up a whole bunch of possibilities storywise. I was glad to see that Sandlin used those possibilities to spice up the action storyline.

The romantic storyline was really delicious. Aidan and Krys were a good match for each other and the romance build up was done really well. I liked how Krys didn't go along with the whole idea of vampires right away, but needed time to get process what was happening.

There were some really cool secondary characters and I'm glad that at least two of them will get their own story, because especially Mirren was one seriously intriguing vampire. I also really liked Hannah, a child-vampire, and I hope she will return in other books, because I really want to learn more about her.

I can advice this book to anyone who likes their vampires hunky and brooding. I'm glad to say I have the next book in this series (which will be about Mirren) in my to-be-read pile and i'll be reading it soon for sure.

Why should you read it:
Hunky, brooding vampires!
