From ALMYBNENR I received:

Flip This Zombie by Jesse Petersen

(Turned out to be not my kind of book, but I'm glad I finally got a chance to read it as I was very curious about it.)

On the Edge by Ilona Andrews
(A really cool read. Expect a review soon and I'm going to put book 2 in this series on my wishlist.)

Many thanks to both ladies for their generosity!

Happy Hour at Casa Dracula - Book Review

Happy Hour at Casa Dracula (Casa Dracula #1)
by Marta Acosta

What is it about:
Milagro De Los Santos needs to get her career on track -- and a sexy man to come home to. At a party for her ex-boyfriend, she meets the unusually attractive Oswald Grant, who sweeps her off her feet. But when he bites her in the heat of passion and she instantly falls ill, Milagro realizes Oswald is not just any fabulous man -- he's a vampire. Whisked away to his family's estate to recover, Milagro learns the ins and outs of vampirism while falling for a wickedly inappropriate man. But when the vampires' lives are threatened, Milagro uses her wits, her wiles, and an incredibly whacky scheme to bring down a power-mad secret society that refuses to let the undead live and love in peace.

What did I think of it:
To be honest: I was disappointed by this book.

Maybe my expectations were too high as lots of people told me it was both funny and fun, but I found it entertaining at best. The romance storyline didn't work for me: I really couldn't understand the attraction between Milagro and Oswald at all. The rest of the story was entertaining enough to finish the book, but didn't have me cheering Milagro on to see her succeed. I felt myself shaking my head over her actions in annoyance instead. The best part of this book: Acosta's writing style. It's breezy and witty and I would probably pick up another book by Acosta because of this writing style, but it won't be book two in this series though.

Why should you read it:
Witty writing and vampires

The Native Star - Book Review

The Native Star (Native Star #1)
by M.K. Hobson

What is it about:
The year is 1876. In the small Sierra Nevada settlement of Lost Pine, the town witch, Emily Edwards, is being run out of business by an influx of mail-order patent magics. Attempting to solve her problem with a love spell, Emily only makes things worse. But before she can undo the damage, an enchanted artifact falls into her possession—and suddenly Emily must flee for her life, pursued by evil warlocks who want the object for themselves.

Dreadnought Stanton, a warlock from New York City whose personality is as pompous and abrasive as his name, has been exiled to Lost Pine for mysterious reasons. Now he finds himself involuntarily allied with Emily in a race against time—and across the United States by horse, train, and biomechanical flying machine—in quest of the great Professor Mirabilis, who alone can unlock the secret of the coveted artifact. But along the way, Emily and Stanton will be forced to contend with the most powerful and unpredictable magic of all—the magic of the human heart.

What did I think of it:
I'm in two minds about this book. I really liked Emily and Dreadnought and enjoyed reading about the adventures they have while on their way to Professor Mirabilis. The developing relationship between them is written very well, even though I felt like banging their heads together from time to time. What I didn't like was the plot in general. It felt too complicated and too much 'End of the World' to me. I will confess this is a personal dislike: I do not like it when an author gets out the big guns (so to speak) in a story that in my opinion could have done without them. But all in all this is a pleasant, steampunkish read, full of adventure and a bit of romance.

Why should you read it:
Steampunk and magic!

Flip This Zombie - Book review

Flip this Zombie (Living with the Dead #2)
by Jesse Petersen

What is it about:
The Zombie Apocalypse has been good to Sarah and David. Their marriage is better than ever. They communicate well, share responsibilities, and now, they're starting a business. ZombieBusters-for all your zombie extermination needs.

There are lots of zombies and that means lots of customers...Except one of them doesn't want the zombies dead, he wants them alive and ready for experimentation. Mad scientists make for difficult clients and this time, Sarah and David might have bitten off more than they can chew.

What did I think of it:
Another fun story, full of zombie goodness!

This book did feel a bit more serious than the first book though. Don't get me wrong, it has plenty of funny moments and enough zombie mayhem to satisfy even me, but the overall feel was a bit more intense than I had thought it would be. Not that this is a negative thing, I really enjoyed the story and love Sarah and David even more after finishing this book (David is my favourite of the two I'll confess). And as with every good zombie book, there's only one truly negative point: I finished it much too soon! Now I'll have to try to get my trotters on the next book in this series as I'm addicted ;-)

Why should you read it:
Braiiiins.....

Waiting on Wednesday - Midnight

After reading Nightfall I can't wait to read the next book in the Dark Age Dawning trilogy:

Midnight by Ellen Connor

Three years of wandering the post-apocalyptic wasteland has stripped Dr. Chris Welsh of humanity and hope. He’s a dangerous man now, full of dark energy and yen for violence. A harrowing loss drove him from his home, and he hasn’t stopped moving since. Grim and sardonic, he never found anything worth sticking around for–until now.

Rosa Cortez runs Valle de Bravo, a haven of civilization amid the chaos of the Change. Soldiers take their orders directly from her–the iron hand within a velvet glove. The last thing she needs is a feral loner upsetting the town’s tentative balance. However, for the good of her people, she lets the sexy doctor stay. He evokes a delicious new longing, but she won’t submit to any man.

Tension rises as bloodthirsty raiders strike again and again, bent on possessing Valle and its resources. Together Chris and Rosa battle hellhounds and dust pirates while also fighting desperate attraction. To save them, love must overcome the pain of the past–and build a future in this brutal Dark Age…

I already finished this book, but wanted to share some zombie goodness.

The zombie lurched out of the bushes, oblivious to the fact that some of the hard, dead branches had stuck in his legs and now tore loose and stayed in his flesh like weird porcupine quills as he walked. If it wasn't so gross, it would have been pretty comical.

Follow My Lead - Book Review by Voodoo Bride

Follow My Lead by Kate Noble

What is it about:
Being the most sought-after bachelor in London can be trying. Jason Cummings, Duke of Rayne, should know. But when he winds up an unwilling escort to the headstrong Winnifred Crane on a trip across Europe, he realizes he'll do anything to keep this independent beauty safe-even if it means marrying her.

What did Voodoo Bride think of it:

I must say I was surprised by this Historical Romance.
I'm used to there being a whirlwind romance after the instant attraction when the hero and heroine first meet. In this story however the attraction that grows between the lead characters is a slow, but steady thing. It is build step by step while Jason and Winnifred travel Europe and find themselves falling from one adventure into the next.
It was different and rather sweet I must say.

The villain of this story however is just as much a cardboard villain as in most Historical Romances that feature a villain, but as his presence is needed to send Jason and Winnifred on their journey, which is hilarious, daunting and above all very entertaining to read, I will not judge too harshly.

So, while this book wasn't what I expected, I did enjoy it and I will probably try other books by Noble in the future.

Why should you read it:
It's a sweet, adventure-filled Historical Romance

Black Wings - Book Review

Black Wings (Madeline Black #1) by Christina Henry

What is it about:
As an Agent of Death, Madeline Black is responsible for escorting the souls of the dearly departed to the afterlife. It's a 24/7 job with a lousy benefits package.

Maddy's position may come with magical powers and an impressive wingspan, but it doesn't pay the bills. And then there are her infuriating boss, tenant woes, and a cranky, popcorn-loving gargoyle to contend with.

Things start looking up, though, when tall, dark, and handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent the empty apartment in Maddy's building. It's probably just a coincidence that as soon as he moves in demons appear on the front lawn. But when an unholy monster is unleashed upon the streets of Chicago, Maddy discovers powers she never knew she possessed. Powers linked to a family legacy of tarnished halos.

Powers that place her directly between the light of Heaven and the fires of Hell...

What did I think of it:
I'm in two minds about this book. It's nicely written, has cool characters (especially Beezle, the gargoyle), an interesting setting and an even more intriguing mythology attached to it. Still the story felt off to me. There were some incongruities that bugged me and besides that the whole set up felt too big. Too many things came popping up too close together. I'd have liked this story better if some things were left a mystery, only to be revealed in a future book. Still, I liked it enough to give this series another chance and read book two, if only to see where Henry will take the story next after the big things that happened in this book.

Why should you read it:
It's a nice UF read and it has a gargoyle.

Blue Moon - Book Review

Blue Moon (Nightcreature #1) by Lori Handeland

What is it about:
Miniwa, Wisconsin is under siege, but not by the usual summer tourists. The area's normally shy wolf population has begun stalking human prey, and their victims have been disappearing...or worse. Something is happening in the woods. Something brutal and primitive...

Officer Jessie McQuade has seen plenty in her years on the force-but nothing as intriguing as the gorgeous, naked man she encounters while tracking a rogue wolf. Professor Will Cadotte is a Native American activist. He's also the only man capable of distracting Jessie from her work. And for a cop, distraction-no matter how pleasurable-can be deadly. It's against Jessie's better judgment to accept Will's help in her investigation, yet she soon finds herself doing exactly that-and more. Will's dark, penetrating eyes see into a part of Jessie's soul she never knew existed. It's exhilarating...and terrifying.
Now, as a town's deepest secrets come to light, no one is safe: not friends, lovers, or strangers. And as Jessie follows a bloody trail to the shocking truth, she'll have to decide who she can trust when the moon is full...

What did me and Voodoo Bride think of it:
A nice start of what could be a cool series.
The story is suspenseful and full of action and the romance is hot according to Voodoo Bride. I liked Jessie: she's a no nonsense kind of woman who takes action when needed. The writing is decent and I loved the world building and setting. My one negative point is that Handeland used some obvious tricks to try to make the story even more suspenseful, but because they were so obvious they only managed to annoy me. Apart from that, this book is an enjoyable Paranormal Romance and we'll probably pick up more books in this series in the future.

Why should you read it:
It's got werewolves and romance.

Storm's Heart - Book Review by Voodoo Bride

Storm's Heart (Elder Races #2) by Thea Harrison

What is it about:
During the rule of her murderous Dark Fae uncle, Thistle "Tricks" Periwinkle found sanctuary among the Wyr in New York. Her ethereal beauty and sparkling personality won the hearts of the public, but after her uncle's death, there are those who don't want to see her ascend the throne...

Able to wield thunder and lightning, Wyr sentinel Tiago Black Eagle has ruled the skies for centuries. His massive build and thunderous power make him one of the Wyr's best weapons. And he's the one sent to protect Tricks when she's almost assassinated in Chicago.

Soon, both Tiago and Tricks will fall prey to the stormy hunger that engulfs them- a passion that will shake the very foundation of all the worlds.

What did Voodoo Bride think of it:
I'm not doing this often, but I just have to let out a fan-girlish squeee about Tiago! I was already intrigued by Tiago when he was mentioned in Dragon Bound, but I hadn't expected him to be so extremely cool as he turned out to be in this book.

With a character like Tiago the story could have been utterly craptacular and I would still have enjoyed myself, but luckily it wasn't only Tiago that made this book. I had feared the story would be too political minded for my tastes, but it turned out to be really suspenseful and dramatic and very well written. Besides Tiago and Niniane there were lots of other really interesting and fun characters and I'm already looking forward to reading more about some of them in future books.

I must say I enjoyed this book even more than I did enjoy Dragon Bound, which is largely because I could really relate with both lead characters in Storm's Heart, where in Dragon Bound I was a bit unsure about Pia. All in all this is a wonderful read and I'm so going to read more books in this series!

Why should you read it:
Tiago!! *swoons*

I can't help it, but everytime I pick up this book I suddenly feel like listening to Black Wings by Tom Waits

They looked tired but anticipatory, the way that people do when they're almost home from work and they know they can put on their comfy socks and be with the one they love.
The two didn't even notice Beezle and me as we passed.

Feeding the Vampire - Book Review by Voodoo Bride

Feeding the Vampire by Jeffe Kennedy
ebook, novella/short story

What is it about:
Through good luck and healthy cowardice, Misty has survived the earthquakes that have torn the world apart, but has no skills to speak of. Or so she thinks. She does have blood, and someone must feed the vampire who has offered his protection and strength in exchange for sustenance. Feeding Ivan is a priority, and Misty finally serves a purpose.

But when she awakens tied to his bed, an unwilling gift to Ivan from the townspeople, she discovers he has hungers other than blood. Hungers he expects her to satisfy in the most carnal manner. Under his seductive persuasion, Misty discovers she has the power to sustain Ivan in all ways—while experiencing unspeakable pleasure herself.

What did Voodoo Bride think of it:
This is a quick, delightful and seriously hot erotic read. For such a short read Kennedy does an amazing job in defining her lead character Misty and making her likeable. I love how Kennedy doesn't shy away from mixing pleasure and pain, giving the scenes between Misty and Ivan an extra bite (no pun intended) that gives the story a slight BDSM feel. I hope Kennedy will write more stories in this setting and I wouldn't mind if those stories were a bit longer than this one as well.

Why should you read it:
It's post-apocalyptic, vampire erotica!

Jane Slayre - Book Review

Jane Slayre: The Literary Classic with a Blood-Sucking Twist
by Charlotte Brontë and Sherri Browning Erwin

What is it about:
Jane Slayre, our plucky demon-slaying heroine, a courageous orphan who spurns the detestable vampyre kin who raised her, sets out on the advice of her ghostly uncle to hone her skills as the fearless slayer she’s meant to be. When she takes a job as a governess at a country estate, she falls head-over-heels for her new master, Mr. Rochester, only to discover he’s hiding a violent werewolf in the attic—in the form of his first wife. Can a menagerie of bloodthirsty, flesh-eating, savage creatures-of-the-night keep a swashbuckling nineteenth-century lady from the gentleman she intends to marry? Vampyres, zombies, and werewolves transform Charlotte Brontë’s unforgettable masterpiece into an eerie paranormal adventure that will delight and terrify.

What did I think of it:
The first part of this retelling of Jane Eyre is the best part of the book.
There's zombie mayhem, zombie slaughtering and more zombies!

With a start like that I was sure I'd be delighted by this book all through, but then Jane went to work for Rochester and the thrills died down.

Don't get me wrong: the story is very cool. Anyone who has ever read the original will know that. It's just that the added vampires, werewolves and other stuff were too little to be able to compete with the original story. Wether this is because Browning Erwin showed too much respect for the original story or because Brontë’s penmanship just can't be topped I do not know, but I felt like I could just as well have read the original as there wasn't that much difference between the two versions.

So when I finished this book I felt a great deal of disappointment, especially as this book started out so very promising, but failed to deliver in the end. I do not think I'll reread this version, I'll grab the original instead.

Why should you read it:
The zombie bits are really cool!

Wild and Steamy - Book Review

Wild & Steamy by Meljean Brook, Jill Myles and Carolyn Crane
ebook - anthology

What is it about:
The Blushing Bounder by Meljean Brook - An Iron Seas novella of 15,000 words:
The search for a killer puts Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth's life in danger and her assistant, Constable Newberry, in the line of fire. But Newberry faces a danger of another kind: to his heart, by the woman forced to marry him. What will it take for this prudish bounder to convince his wife to stay?

Vixen by Jill Myles - A shifter novella of 15,000 words:
Miko's denied her were-fox nature for far too long and turned her back on her vixen heritage. But when she meets two very sexy cat-shifters, she has to decide if she truly wants to give up on her frisky side, or embrace it. Because the were-fox in her doesn't want to choose between both men...it wants them both.

Kitten-tiger & the Monk by Carolyn Crane - A Disillusionists novella of 20,000 words:
Sophia Sidway, Midcity's most dangerous memory revisionist, seeks out the mysterious Monk in the wasteland beneath the Tangle turnpike, hoping for redemption...but it turns out that the Monk is not all that pious, and the turnpike is no turnpike at all.

What did I think of it:

The Blushing Bounder by Meljean Brook:
This story was set in Brook's Iron Seas world, but where the other two stories in this series are dark and gritty, this story is so sweet you can't help but smile while reading it. It's a lovely addition to a terrific series.

Vixen by Jill Myles:
What can I say.
It's well written, but this piggy doesn't like menages, so this is not a story for me.

Kitten-tiger & the Monk by Carolyn Crane:
I've been dying to learn more about the Monk ever since he was mentioned in Mind Games, so Crane catered to my wishes with this story. But it's not just the Monk that made me love this story: Crane's writing, her world building and the story itself of course are all brilliant.

Why should you read it:
If you're a fan of at least one of these authors you need to get this anthology!

Archangel's Consort - Book Review

Archangel's Consort (Guild Hunter #3) by Nalini Singh

What is it about:
An ancient and malevolent female immortal is rising in Manhattan to reclaim her son, the archangel Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena Deveraux, a vampire-hunter-and Raphael's lover.

What did I think of it:
In this story what happened took place more on a psychological level than that there was lots of action (ok, I'll be honest: there was frequent hot loving). Although I loved the story there were times I wanted to kick the characters to get them to do something besides worrying about what might happen. That annoyance aside this is just as wonderful a read as the previous two books. I'm in love with Singh's writingstyle and with her characters. I really hope she'll continue this series past book 4 (which I'm so going to get my trotters on soon) and that she'll give my favourite minor characters books of their own.

Why should you read it:
Angels AND vampires all in one series: what's not to love?! ;-)

Fornax Rising - Book Review

Fornax Rising by Nicole Ross

What is it about:
Daughter of the shipping magnate John Fornax, Cassandra has had a harder life than most young people of her social standing. After a tragic childhood accident leaves her an amputee, Cassandra’s uncle and engineer, Philip Fornax, builds her a revolutionary prosthesis which replaces the hand she lost. As Cassandra begins to make her own decisions about her future, she finds that her domineering father intends her to live a radically different life. She emancipates herself loudly and publicly at her eighteenth birthday party, scandalising her parents and putting paid to her father's scheme. When Philip receives an offer to work in an airship factory in Germany, Cassandra follows him so she can put some distance between herself and her father. As the threat of war looms over Europe, the German army has the talented engineer's most advanced creation firmly in its sights. Cassandra had hoped to leave her troubles behind when she left Britain, but finds they have just begun.

What did I think of it:
Although overall a nice read this story did disappoint me a bit. The lead character gets a revolutionary (steampunkish) prosthesis very early on in the book, which lead to certain expectations as to how the story would progress, but only near the end of the story are these expectations fulfilled and then things are going over the top fast. It's really a shame in my opinion when a story hook isn't used to it's full potential, and in this case I even got the feeling the story could also have been written without Cassie having her prosthesis.

Aside from this plot flaw the story is quite pleasant and interesting and I liked the lead character Cassie. Among the other characters there are some really intriguing characters, while others make you hate them on sight. Ross' writing is decent, although the dialogues miss liveliness.

There's a sequel in the make and I might give the sequel a try, if only to see if Ross will make use of the potential of the world she created in Fornax Rising.

Why should you read it:
It's a pleasant historical Young Adult story with a little bit of Steampunk added to it.

The Official Private Eye Handbook - Book Review

The Official Private Eye Handbook: Featuring Brick Stone, Private Eye
by Phoenix

What is it about:
It was a dark and stormy night in The City and a hard-nosed gumshoe who wanted nothing to do with the unbalancing, unpredictable ways of magic found himself drawn ever further along strange paths. Babes, bullets, murder and mayhem were all part of the usual mix for Brick Stone as he worked to unravel the tangle of lies and mysteries brought to him by one client after another. That was all he wanted. As far as Brick was concerned, all magic ever did was make cases more complicated and make it take longer for him to figure out who he needed to shoot.

What did I think of it:
This book consists of several short stories which are related with each other. As I didn't know this when I started the book it threw me a bit when I reached the second story which took off at a completely different moment than where the first story ended. That confusing surprise aside this is a pleasant read. Phoenix's writing is solid, although the format he chose leaves little room for character developement. Speaking of characters: I did think that Brick was a bit gullible at times, especially where women were involved and I felt like kicking some sense into him. I'm not sure yet if I would read more books by Phoenix, it would depend on the story I think, but all in all this book is a nice read for anyone who loves hard boiled detective stories.

Why should you read it:
If you like hard boiled detectives with a hint of magic, you should try this book.

Archangel's Kiss - Book Review

Archangel's Kiss (Guild Hunter #2) by Nalini Singh

What is it about:
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find that she has become an angel-and that her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel Raphael, likes having her under his control. But almost immediately, Raphael must ready Elena for a flight to Beijing, to attend a ball thrown by the archangel Lijuan. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan's power lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena...

What did I think of it:
I really enjoyed this book. It's not as intense as the first book, but it has other qualities that lift it to the same level as it predecessor. In Angel's Blood most of the interactions were between Raphael and Elena, but in Archangel's Kiss there is lots of interaction with other angels and vampires as well. I really liked reading about the other angels, about their society and history. Some characters got more depth and I'm already looking forward to their return in future books. Singh's writing and world building are beautiful and the story itself is full of romance, suspense and cool action. A great read and I will most certainly continue reading this series.

Why should you read it:
It's got angels and vampires!

At the end of the month, SHOW US YOUR R.A.K! Make a post saying 'Thank You' to whoever granted one of your wishes and share it with us :)

OPEN TO EVERYONE!
Let's keep our International bloggers in mind and in our hearts.
Remember, there's always the Book Depository and they offer FREE shipping!
