Near the Bone
by Christina Henry
What is it about:
A woman trapped on a mountain attempts to survive more than one kind of monster, in a dread-inducing horror novel from the national bestselling author Christina Henry.
Mattie can't remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. She must never make him upset. But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they're not alone after all.
There's something in the woods that wasn't there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws.
When three strangers appear on the mountaintop looking for the creature in the woods, Mattie knows their presence will anger William. Terrible things happen when William is angry.
What did I think of it:
One of the facebook book groups I'm a member of has a horror buddy read each month and decided to pick this book for January. It sounded like it might be a cool read, so I decided to join.
And I had a good time with this book.
I did think at times that Henry was trying to put too much into the story. There's William, who has been making things difficult if not awful for Mattie for quite some time, and there's something scary in the woods. In my opinion the story would have worked just as well if it had been about just one of these things.
But both of them together did give me lots of action and mayhem, so I didn't mind too much.
If you're triggered by abuse and things like that, you better stay clear of this book. Mattie has had a hard life with lots of abuse and it's a big part of the story. I myself think this part of the story was well done, and I cheered Mattie on to find the strength to get away from the abuse.
Although this is classified as horror, it didn't scare me or creep me out. I have discovered that in books it's atmosphere that can creep me out, but gore and stuff like that don't. And although Henry does try to set atmosphere it never got there for me.
Overall I had a good time with this book. The ending wasn't completely satisfying, but good enough to not leave me frustrated. I have another book by Henry somewhere in my TBR pile and might dig it up.
Why should you read it:
It's an action-packed (horror) read.
